This template and tutorial allows you to be able to have a Name Tag on top of your dialogue boxes in GB Studio

Below are downloadable files that contain the Name Tag System Template.

Try the DEMO to have a feel of the system.

Press Start, interact with all 3 of the actors and read their dialogue boxes in the Living Room scene to see how the Name Tags work.

*The 3rd actor next to the fridge shows what happens when you use a 3 dialogue box. That is not a glitch, I purposely allowed it to cover the name tag so you can see that you would need a different Y-Axis for a 3 line dialogue box. So in the DEMO it will  fix itself. For those who are confused. It is merely just a gimmick to show that 3 line dialogue boxes would have to make you adjust the position of the name tag. If you still don't get it. I don't know anymore. (because a person in reddit doesn't get it)

Features (and reminders):

  1. This template provides a basic Name Tag that appears instantly above your dialogue boxes.
  2. I included 2 samples of Name Tags, one short name and one long name version. Feel free to just edit the name tag sprite and try to insert your own names via any pixel art application editor. You may also change how the name box looks like.
  3. Don't forget to adjust text animation speed in your project into "INSTANT" so that the dialogue boxes wont have to glide up/down every single time you interact with any actor/NPC (you may find set text animation speed in the roster of events)
  4. I have placed "Set Text Animation Speed" in the living room scene.

Limitations:

  1. These name tags move from one position to another depending on the lines of the dialogue boxes. If you use a 2 line dialogue box it will set the entire dialogue event into 2 lines all throughout unless you insert a different dialogue box after. Same as a 3 dialogue box. Therefore the name tag will have to be adjusted accordingly.
  2. The timing of when the name tag appears in the beginning cannot be perfected. There is a super slight delay but once the dialogue is done, it disappears all at the same time perfectly. (if you find a fix for this kindly let me know. Would love to apply it to my game.)

Do as you wish with how this template works, you may tweak it, copy and apply it to different kinds of projects. Just make sure to adjust events/scripts accordingly if you were to change a lot of things for it to work.

If you're having a hard time to make it work. Just copy everything to the dot then work from there :)

Hey guys, for those wondering if this is a glitch:


It is not. I purposely allowed the name tag to be covered by the dialogue box to show that if you use a 3 line dialogue box your Y-axis for the name tag should be adjusted to go up by 1. So in the DEMO, if you read the dialogue with this actor next to the fridge. It will fix itself.

Just had to clear this up cause some people on reddit thought it was a glitch.
